Alien Arena is a fast paced, furious frag fest with arenas ranging from
the small, to the massive. With a large built-in player base, it's
never hard to find a good match going on, at any hour of the day. The
community is friendly, as well as prolific. Dozens of maps, models, and
various accessories have been created by community members to add on to
the game experience.
New for AA2K7 is Team Core Assault, a mode in which players must
work together to disable their enemy team's central metal spider. Don't
forget about the Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Deathball, and All
Out Assault mode(in which players can enter vehicles) either.

How to Optimize Alien Arena ( Credit for this goes to [*DD*]Assassin from here .
When you play Alien arena does your game seem jerky or not run period? Then this thread is for you.
What is this?
This
is a quick guide to help your game run better if you experience low
frame rates, and or a game that just won't run. I have a Radeon Xpress
200 (integrated graphics card) and this seems to help my game out alot.
In game options disable:
-Shaders -Shadows -Dynamic Lights -Real time lighting -Set your sound quality to 22 khz
In Video options
-Turn OFF multitextural combine -Turn OFF bumpmapping -Turn OFF Hires Textures -Lower texture quality -Turn off reflective water -Make sure bloom is DISABLED -Make sure vertical sync is OFF -Try
to run at a low resolution preferably 800X600 mine is lower than that
640x480 (remember the lower it is the better the game will run).
Although on most cards that are relatively new, running the game at
your desktop resolution (the one that your computer uses) is the best
way to go. -Run the game in windowed mode. This can help framerates
drastically (not advised with 640x480, as the window will be a bit too
tiny, use 800x600 and up).
To check your fps (frames per second)
drop your console in game with the ~ button located near the 1 key, and
type in cl_drawfps 1. That will draw your fps at the bottom right of
your screen. It should be noted, however, that if you don't need to see
your framerate (aka if they aren't bouncy, and you don't need to do the
thing below), then set it to off.
Ok this is the last thing if
your frames are "bouncy" then you want to have a solid framerate. So
drop the console again (~ button) and type in cl_maxfps XX where XX is
the desired frame rate. For example: cl_maxfps 40. And remember, when
it's not bouncy, set cl_drawfps to 0, unless you want to watch it.
You
may want to try and experiment with different numbers untill you get
one that sticks. (REMEMBER that a little bouncy is NOT bad but when
your jumping between 80 - 20 fps bad then the game won't run as well)
People with a strong computer should set cl_maxfps to 140, as it's the optimal quake engine fps.
If
all else is failing, and AA still runs slow for you, there is one last
alternative. Bad.cfg is a game config file that takes the graphics and
makes them worse than in game options could ever do. You can find
bad.cfg here.
It should be noted that bad.cfg is absolutely the LAST RESORT. Your
game will be very pixelated, as if you're running it in software mode.
People who like their graphics and won't accept anything bad should
stay away from this. But, on the other hand, it's proven to increase
framerates, and the game does retain its overall look. Just know that -Grated floors are now invisible -It's extremely pixelated -The game menu settings won't tell you the full story about what it does
Any questions on bad.cfg should be directed to GrueTamer from
Now, if your framerates still suck after this, ask in IRC.
Enjoy!

System Requirements
requires a decent OpenGL card (I'd say GeForce 2/older integrated Intel minimum, GeForce 4 or higher recommended) 128mb of ram minimum, 256 recommended 650mhz processor minimum, 1.4ghz recommended ... around those lines

These are explanations of the current game modes in Alien Arena. I've
included abbreviations because server names often include them to save
space, and you might encounter them while talk with another player.
Deathmatch Abbreviation: DM
Kill everything! You have no teammates, everyone is an enemy. There is no objective. You win by killing the most people!
Team Deathmatch Abbreviation: TDM
Like Deathmatch,
but you fight in teams. You are either assigned to a red or a blue
team. You can tell which team you have been assigned to by looking at
the color at the bottom-center of your screen. Make sure you don't
attack your teammates! Servers may or may not have team damage on.
All Out Assault Abbreviation: AOA
This is just like the Deathmatch or Team Deathmatch mode, only you can pilot spaceships which are strategically placed around the map.
Capture The Flag Abbreviation: CTF
This is similar to Team Deathmatch
only there is an objective. Each team possesses a flag in their base.
The objective is to capture the flag of the opposing team. Once you
grab the flag, rush back and return it to your flag. If your flag is
missing, then you can't return their flag and gain a point. If your
flag is not in your base, you can touch it, your flag will return to
your base. If an enemy has your flag, you can kill him, and he will
drop the flag, then you can touch it and return it to your base.
DeathBall Abbreviation: DB
This is similar to the Deathmatch or Team Deathmatch
mode, only there is an objective. There is a DeathBall (A giant ball)
placed somewhere in the map, as well as a goal. You must grab the
DeathBall, and shoot it inside of the goal to score a point. But
beware, when you grab the DeathBall, you will be stuck using the
DeathBall gun until you shoot it. You can kill a player and he will
drop the DeathBall.
Cattle Prod Abbreviation: CP
This is similar to Team Deathmatch
only there is an objective. Each team must find cattle, and lead them
to a portal. The team with the most cattle caught wins. Killing cattle
gives you no points, but it is a good tactic to keep the opposing team
from capturing cattle.
Team Core Assault Abbreviation: TCA
This is similar to Team Deathmatch
only there is an objective. Each time possesses several nodes, and a
giant spider node. The objective is to disable the opposing team's
nodes by running over them, and then attacking their giant spider node.
The giant spider node does not take damage until all of the opposing
team's nodes are down. If someone of the same team runs over a disabled
node, it will reactivate.

These are explanations of the current mutators in Alien Arena. Mutators
modify the core game-play in various ways. It often results in fun,
playable goodness. Many servers run mutators, so if you've played for a
while you might have come across some.
Instagib Abbreviation: Insta
You
start out with a disruptor, and it only takes one shot to kill a
person. The only exception is when a person has over 200 combined
health and armor points. All other weapons are disabled.
Rocket Arena Abbreviation: RA
You start out with a rocket launcher. All other weapons are disabled.
Excessive Abbreviation: Exc
You
start out with every gun. Each gun has been enhanced to either fire
faster, or do more damage. You start out with 300 health, and it
regenerates when you lose any health. You also move faster.
Vampire Abbreviation: Vamp
You obtain health when you damage someone.
Regeneration Abbreviation: Regen
Your health regenerates slowly when your health is lower than the max health.
Quick Weapons Abbreviation: Quick Weps
The time it takes to switch weapons is much faster than normal.
Anti-Camp Abbreviation: A-C
Anti-Camp is a mechanism in which, if one doesn't move within the amount of time defined in the Camp Time textbox, he is damaged until he either moves or dies.
Player Speed Abbreviation: PS
Players move at a much faster speed than normal. Enabled by default while excessive is enabled.
Low Gravity Abbreviation: LG
Low gravity. Players can jump much higher (at the same speed) than normal.
Jousting Abbreviation: Joust
You can jump multiple times in the air. When you are in the air, just keep pressing the jump button!
Class Based Abbreviation: CB
Robot,
Alien, and Human models come with different attributes. (Todo: actually
put in the attributes -- a mod can edit it in with the attributes if
they want)

The Unofficial Guide to Alien Arena Written and Compiled by GrueTamer
Note:
This is MY guide, and not all of the tips I will include are supported
by Irritant. And this is intended for players who aren't the best at
AA, and wish to become better. Finally, these aren't in order. With
that said...
1. Stay in motion. A moving target is much
harder to hit than one standing motionless. Plus, some servers have
anticamp running, so if you stay in the same place for too long, then
you suicide. If you are unsure if a server is running anticamp, then
DON'T CAMP, just to be sure. And even if a server isn't running
anticamp, DON'T CAMP!
2. Teamkilling=BAD! Teams are displayed by
the colored orbs above the player. Your team is displayed by the
colored bar at the bottom of your screen. If the orbs match the color
of this bar, then DON'T SHOOT THAT PLAYER!
3. Get new weapons.
If you're caught running around with a blaster, you're most likely
going to die. But if you have a better weapon, like a rocket launcher
or a chaingun, you can unleash pain on your enemies, and your frag rate
will shoot up.
4. Use powerups! Even if you don't like using
them, powerups can turn the tides in a seemingly hopeless game. The
most powerful powerups is (arguably) the quad damage. As the name
implies, this multiplies all damage done by your weapons by 4. Of
course, there's also sproing (jump really high), haste (jump really
far), and invulnerability (you won't die), but the quad damage makes
even the blaster a force to be reckoned with. This being said, some
weapons are better with the quad than others. For example, the
disrupter may be very powerful with the quad, but it's still pretty
hard to land hits for some people. The weapons that I find the best
with the quad are the chaingun/shotgun, beamgun, and rocket launcher.
These inflict massive damage with the quad. But be warned, the rocket
launcher's blast radius is much larger with the quad, and it's alot
easier to kill yourself! Below is a table calculating the amount of
hits required to kill an opponent from each weapon, quad and no quad
(thanks Danger!)
| Weapon | Without Quad | With Quad | | Blaster | 4 hits | 1 hits | | Blaster Alt | 10 hits | 3 hits | | Rocket Launcher | 1 hit | 1 hit | | Rocket Launcher Alt | 1 hit | 1 hit | | Beamgun | 4 hits | 1 hit | | Beamgun Alt | 5 hits | 2 hits | | Chaingun | 5 hits | 2 hits | | Chaingun Alt (Close Range) | 1 hit | 1 hit | | Chaingun Alt (Mid Range) | 2 hits | 1 hit | | Chaingun Alt (Mid-Long Range) | 3 hits | 1 hit | | Smartgun (bad shot) | 3 hits | 3 hits* | | Smartgun (well-placed shot) | 1 hit | 1 hit | | Smartgun Alt | 2 hits | 1 hit | | Disruptor | 2 hits | 1 hit | | Disruptor Alt | 1 hit | 1 hit | | Vaporizer | 1 hit | 1 hit | | Vaporizer Alt | 1 hit | 1 hit | | Flamethrower | 1 hit | 1 hit | | Flamethrower Alt | 1 hit | 1 hit | | Grapple | 5 count | 4 count** | | Grapple Alt | 1 count | 1 count |
*The conditions of my first electricity test were hard to replicate, so this value could actually be much smaller. **This value could be because of fluctuations in my counting speed, and not due to any impact caused by the quad.
5.
Use alt fires. Every single weapon in Alien Arena has an alt fire. Be
it a small instant hit ray, a sniper mode, or even a shotgun, mastery
of the alternate fires is crucial. Make sure that you know the location
of your alt fire button, and make sure that it's easy to hit, because
you're gonna need it. A complete list of alt fires is as follows:
Blaster: a short little ray, instant hit, but very weak Alien Smartgun: a mine Chaingun: a shotgun VERY USEFUL! Flamethrower: fiery bombs Rocket launcher: homing missiles (need cells) Disrupter: sniper mode, does more damage Beamgun: a blast, similar to the Blaster's regular fire Alien Vaporizer: a huge bomb Grapple hook: a shorter grapple designed to kill people
6.
The grapple hook. You may have overlooked this simple tool, but it can
do so much on the battlefield. Not only can it take you to hard to
reach places, but it can KILL PEOPLE! That's right, you can actually
latch onto people and kill them. But be warned. Some people don't like
players who use the grapple to get the flag faster, just so they can
have a higher score. It can sometimes feel cheap. But you don't have
much of a weapon to defend yourself, so it balances itself out. But
that doesn't stop people from not liking it.
7. Movement. Moving
frequently may be important, but it isn't the only important thing with
moving. First of all, you need to move with DEPTH (don't just move left
and right) when locked in battle with someone. They will find it harder
to hit you, and you'll have a better chance of living. Also,
bunnyhopping is very useful. To bunnyhop, just jump, and continue to
jump right when you hit the ground. Not only can you go at very high
speeds like this, but it makes it EVEN HARDER to hit you. And here's
another little tidbit. If you jump while pressing the keys that make
you move left or right, you'll jump farther. Good for clearing that
bottomless pit. But perhaps the most important thing to remember is to
MOVE UNPREDICTABLY! If you're opponent can't figure out where you're
going to move next, you have the advantage over them. All the tips
above used correctly can make you as hard to hit as you could ever want.
8.
Learn your opponents. When playing someone, make sure to learn their
strategies (favorite weapon, path through the map), so that you can
predict where they're going to be AND find the best way to kill them.
It's also important to make it harder to predict yourself, though. For
example, become skilled with every weapon in the game, and take
different paths through the maps every time, so that you can't get
predicted, and you can take your opponent off guard.
9. LEARN
THE ARSENAL! So, you can kill someone. You move perfectly. You use alt
fires. You grapple people to death. You don't camp or teamkill. But if
you don't know when you should use certain weapons, you're a walking
target. Learn when and where to use your weapons, and you'll be good to
go. Weapons have secrets, too, but I won't disclose these secrets. You
have to experiment with the arsenal and find them out. I'm not here to
tell you everything, I'm just here to get you off to a solid start.
10.
Better you have the items than your opponent. It's very important and
helpful to be the one who gets all the weapons and powerups, so that
you're adversary can't. Won't that make your job easier? What you
should do is time your passing so that you get the newly spawned
weapon/powerup before your opponent has a chance to. Won't it be easier
to kill someone when they have a blaster, but you have a beamgun/quad?
If you answered no...then change your answer to YES!
Lastly...
11.
HAVE FUN! Seriously, this is a legit tip. You won't play well if you're
discouraged and annoyed, but you will play well if you keep it cool,
and have a good time. This is perhaps the most important tip in this
entire guide, because it helps no matter what you're doing. When
someone owns you with a rocket, congratulate them. When you jump off a
cliff, laugh about it. Not only will you have fun and do better, but
we'll like you more.
Wow, that exhausted all my thinking
cells. I hope that the newer players find my guide helpful, because it
contains tons of tips that I've pioneered in AA and other games. Plus,
it's self updating. Whenever I think of something new, I'll add it! How
awesome!
Well, that's all for now, hope to see you guys in the arena.

In Alien Arena, dodging *will* be limited to side to
side movement, just because I don't want to bloat the clientthink
function any more than it currently is. Also, side to side is really
the only majorly usefull technique, IMO. Walldodges? Perhaps, but not
likely at this time. That might be too costly to do.
This is a server side code implementation. I don't know how it will behave on high ping, so we will find out. I think it should work fine tho.
In
order to dodge in Alien Arena, you must press a sidestep key, release
it fully, then repress it. You will then dodge in that direction. This
is very similar to UT, but with one minor difference, and that is that
if you do it *too* fast, it won't work. You must fully release that
key. Once you get the timing of it down, it is pretty easy, and alot of
fun.
